I started to set up a photoblog-ish thing over at www.43showers.com as the future home of all of them, but that stalled mid-birth so I'm cross-posting this one here from there. I have to apologize for not capturing the shower handle at the Austin Sheraton. It's a testament to how frenzied SXSW was that it's the first shower control photo I've missed since I started the project. Here's the Westin Pasadena:
This one ended up needing to be modded. The first night I tried to use
it, the best I could get out of it was tepid water. I called downstairs
and they told me there had been a boiler outage that had now been
resolved. The next night, it was still busted so I called the front
desk again, and they sent a maintenance guy in. He had to tighten the
screw in the middle of the handle, and that took care of everything.
All in all, a pretty decent shower handle once it was optimized.
But the room's reasonable price, the view of Lee Circle, and the proximity to Circle Bar made up for the shower's apparent shortcomings. Even if I didn't make it to Circle Bar this trip.
Classic design, easy to operate and clearly marked.
I usually don't make editorial comments about the overall hotel stay (this is about the shower controls, and the shower controls only) but I have to add that this was an excellent hotel experience. Highly recommended, especially if you are travelling with a pet.
This is in the guest bathroom of my parents' place in Jamestown. They just renovated so all of the fixtures are new. It's hard to make out in the photo, but there are little red dots on the right and little blue dots on the left. It lost some points on initial usage because it wasn't clear you had to turn the handle past cold to get to the hot, but once I figured that out it was all good. Apparently the shower control apparatus in the main bathroom is quite impressive. I'll have to snap a photo of that one next time I'm in town.
Can't complain about these controls. A highly effective plastic sticker labelling system made them easy to operate.
The shower wasn't terrible. Water pressure was below-average. Baton Rouge water has a greasy, filmy thing going, which I speculated is a handy and thoughtful city additive to replace the need for shaving products.
This particular Motel 6 room lacked even the most basic shower materials, like soap and shampoo. No matter for me, I pack product.
No hint of a 'hot' or 'cold' indicator.
For any newcomers, this is the latest entrant in 43Showers, a chronicle of all of the hotel shower handles I meet. They're all different, and most are confusing when you're staring at them early in the morning for the first time.
Look for the "43showers" tag to see the rest of them. There's a site for all this, but it's not worth looking at yet.
